A news headmaster will take up the position of rector at KwaZulu-Natal’s elite Michaelhouse in January.

Greg Theron, executive headmaster at the co-ed Penryn College in Mbombela (Nelspruit), was announced as new rector of the R170 000-a-year boys’ school by board chairman Gary Ralfe.

Theron said he was “very, very excited”. “Michaelhouse was always the kind of school where I would have liked to teach.”

A founder member of the SA Environmental Education Association, chairman of the SA Heads of Independent Schools, and director of the Independent Schools Association of SA among other achievements, Theron said his leadership experiences had prepared him well for the role.

Theron said that the challenge facing independent education was to provide a “basket” of skills to youngsters.

Guy Pearson, the 15th and second-longest serving rector (with 11 years at the school), will take up the position of head at Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town, also from January.
