Durban - Albert van Jaarsveld has officially taken up his position as University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) vice-chancellor and principal, it said on Monday.

“Dr Van Jaarsveld, who has served as the National Research Foundation's CEO for the last five years, brings with him a wealth of expertise and fresh views that will help take UKZN into the future,” spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said in a statement.

“The university looks forward to his leadership and guidance.”

Van Jaarsveld's term of office officially started on Sunday. He succeeds the university's founding vice-chancellor Prof Malegapuru Makgoba, whose term ended on Saturday.

“However, Prof Makgoba remains at the university for a transitional period of three months, which ends in April 2015,” said Seshoka.

The transitional period would allow for the transfer of executive leadership and responsibilities, and give Van Jaarsveld time to familiarise himself with the university.

His installation ceremony would be held on March 7.
