Pietermaritzburg - There are no ghost teachers in KwaZulu-Natal, provincial education department head Nkosinathi Sishi said on Thursday.
Sishi told the provincial legislature that a series of investigations in the form of head counts had been conducted, and all of them had yielded similar results.
“There was an hypothesis at the beginning of the head count process that said that there could be a lot of ghost teachers in education,” Sishi said.
“There have been four phases of investigations since then and they have concluded there are no ghost teachers.”
His comments came after allegations that the department had 22 000 ghosts teachers that cost it R105 million.
The department currently has 108 000 staff members, including teachers and administrative staff. - Sapa
