Durban - One person died and ten others were injured when a truck and a taxi collided in Umbilo near Durban on Wednesday night, paramedics said.

A woman was killed, three people sustained critical injuries and seven others sustained moderate injuries in the accident, Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said.

The injured had all been travelling in the taxi.

“Paramedics found that a truck proceeding down Bayhead Road had collided with a taxi at the Sydney Road intersection before dragging it, and both came to a stop after the junction,” Jamieson said.

“Paramedics found patients trapped in the wreckage as well as some lying on the roadway,” he said.

The Jaws of Life had to be used to free the taxi driver, who had sustained critical injuries.

Another passenger had to be placed on a manual ventilator on scene due to the critical injuries he had sustained.

The injured were treated on scene before they were taken to the King Edward Hospital for further care.

“At this stage it is unclear what caused the collision. However the SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further,” said Jamieson.
