Durban - A man has been trapped for more than five hours in a trench at a residential property in Kloof, Durban.

ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said at about 2pm on Thursday afternoon, paramedics from ER24 were alerted to the incident. They found the 30-year-old man trapped from his shoulders down under heavy soil. It is understood that he was busy digging a foundation area when the walls collapsed onto him.

Vermaak said paramedics called for further resources and specialised rescue services to help. The fire department, police and other services are working tirelessly on the scene to stabilise the ground and free the man.

The man is talking to the paramedics and appears to be in a stable condition, despite the circumstances.

Extra resources were dispatched shortly after 7pm to relieve the rescuers on scene and provide extra equipment.
