‘Pass black matrics’

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

The KwaZulu-Natal branch of the SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) has called for "biased marking" in favour of black matrics, according to a report.

The KwaZulu-Natal branch of the SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) has called on “biased marking” in favour of black matrics, the Sowetan newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The union's provincial secretary Mbuyiseni Mathonsi reportedly appealed to markers not to be too hard on pupils writing papers not in their mother tongue.

It quoted him saying: “The markers should bear in mind that African pupils were not writing in their mother tongue and spare a thought for those affected by the strike.”

Sadtu was one of the public sector unions that went on strike earlier this year, and although it ended its strike, was the only union that didn't formally accept the government's offer of a 7.5 percent wage increase and R800 housing allowance.

National Sadtu spokeswoman Nomusa Cembi could be reached for comment. Sadtu's Gauteng secretary Tseliso Ledimo told Sapa he was not aware of the request for favourable marking being a national Sadtu request.

“I think it's peculiar to KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.

The editorial in the Sowetan commented that: “What Sadtu is essentially calling for is that we produce mediocre matriculants who were pushed through because those charged with ensuring that they become quality products failed to do so.” - Sapa

Shona-speaking and Ndebele-speaking Zimbabweans write Cambridge O Levels and A Levels that are not in their mother tongue. Do they get any special treatment as a result? NO! So why should South African black people get any special treatment? This adds fuel to the fire when White South Africans complain that African black people only aspire to mediocrity. SADTU - first think about the pupils when you are striking before you come up with rubbish like this. What next - Pass One, Pass All at university as well?

Shame. Is this what it has come to for South Africa. Why do you want mediocre students to pass.I dont get. They will be unemployable! I have come across law graduates who cannot even put together an indictment paper.School receptionists who cannot answer the phone in English. It should be about quality at the end of the day. They have to compete at a global level.Soon other nations will be shunning SA graduates because they will not be fully equipped. What is so hard in coming up with a proper education system? Can somebody tell me. There are numerous examples around.Look at Zimbabwe. Their matrics are top class. They can compete with the best in the world.Same with Kenya, Uganda etc.Are we too ashamed to learn from these countries?

Quick solution, change radio and tv stations to only broadcast in english force them to speak english! IF they are going to fail because on not speaking english, then how are they going to work in the business sector which is english? They benifit no one, this is the ANC plot to keep the black masses dump to keep getting a vote from them! The NP did it and the ANC learnt, why do you think education standards have dropped not increased? Its easy to control people when they cant understand things

Then the government should actively start to promote mother tongue education instead of working to eradicate it.

The rank and file of SADTU leadership comes from the pass one pass all culture. Thats not difficult to identify as when they commence with their barbaric behaviour its not difficult to see that they were never properly educated. Their insinuation that the present Black matriculant are of the same inferior fibre as they are is an insult to the new progressive generation. I challenge every member in leadership of SADTU to take the matric exams 99% will fail. You are a bunch of Buffoons that are ruining the new generation. Get educators from other countries how will be more dedicated. Print this plz

Purely a numbers game. The 'O' in OBE is for 'outcome' remember. Its all about the outcome and not about the learning process at the moment which plays into the hands of the politicians and to the detriment of the learners. SADTU and the Dept need the percentage pass rate to improve so that THEY can look good and claim that they are doing a better job when the percentage pass rate of learners increases. Ofcourse, this is a false claim since the actual quality of the education is low and therefore yes, more learners will be pushed through the 'system'. Then we have thousands of matrics who have 'passed' and yet they can barely read and add and are then somehow expected to be able to make the grade in a varsity?! Meanwhile, the former model C schools are feeding the varsities with what they need in terms of qualifying for varsity. Unfortunately, in South African terms, these are mostly white and coloured learners, who then, in turn get qualifications and have to contend with AA legislation when job hunting. Irony! The Alliance is failing us...wake up!!

Sadtu must just call the teachers out on a permanent striek and force the government to give black kids a matric certificate they day they are born, save a lot of tax payers money.

Why end them to school at all - just give them a matric certificate with varsity exemption on their 18th birthday, and then force employers to employ them with a pension fund, medical aid, workmans compensation, maternity leave, education fund contribution for their kids, free kentucky fried chicken for life ...

Of course, the other problem is that our brilliant government implements education policies designed to keep the majority uneducated, rather than to make them smart. If I were black, I'd be insulted that the ANC thinks I'm not worthy of any level of education higher than that which would give me a job in a factory or a shop. But the only way the ANC will keep winning votes is by having a stupid voting majority, because you'd have to be stupid to vote for a government that keeps you poor, and then still steals from you.

South Africa first language is English. Second language is optional for zulu or afrikaans. I'm a white yet i think it's so degrading to most African's who are insulted to say they can't understand english. This is a new generation of course everyone know's how to speak english. We all make human errors with a few spelling mistakes; but seriously; they are NOT stupid and need a push to pass matric. If they failed dramatically, then they definitely did not bother to open a book and that is for all Matriculants.

They need to concentrate in teaching our kids instead of trying to be politicians. But, I understand because most of them are still walking around with Diplomas which they acquired early in 80's

I am very ashamed of S.African people who keep undermining black people.Imagine our children being marked on their race. What does that say about our kids. Is this another form of undermining blacks as a whole? People need to think before they write or say anything in public or in news papers, profesionals and ellitrit.

No - what they are saying is that it's already difficult to write an exam in a language that is not your own - i can understand that (and no i am not black for those of you just waiting to pull out your race card)

Does SADTU think we are incompetent because we're black? Who ever came with that idea needs to be shot and dried for every generation to see. I passsed my Matric in 1995 when there was violence in our area and we couldn't attend classes, but, I managed to get an exemption. Their kids are studying at expensive schools which had all the infrastructure to cope with the strike. What is SADTU saying about the poor kids mostly at rural areas who had been taught by teachers with fraudulent certificates and degrees?

So SADTU wants beneficiaries of biased marking to get into university easily and then fail in their masses ans waste publicgovernment money that could have been spent more fruitfully to benefit the disadvantaged in other ways! Such thinking by SADTU is warped. That is why black education continues to be of a low standard - SADTU teachers cannot think intelligently! (And this is why Zuma, ministers & provincial politicians send their children to private schools!)
