Durban - ANC members are expected to protest outside the Equality Court in Scottburgh - on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast - on Thursday, when Penny Sparrow's matter is expected to come before a magistrate.

It is unclear what exactly the matter is being called for, but it is believed it has to do with the R150 000 fine she was ordered to pay the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation after she was found guilty of hate speech.

Last January, Sparrow posted on Facebook: "I’m sorry to say that I was amongst the revellers and all I saw were black on black skins what a shame. I do know some wonderful and thoughtful black people. This lot of monkeys just don’t want to even try. But think they can voice opinions and get their way oh dear".

“From now on I shall address the blacks of South Africa as monkeys as I see the cute little wild monkeys do the same, pick and drop litter,” Sparrow added.

On Wednesday night, the ANC issued a statement in which it said it was "shocked but not surprised". It said Sparrow had "no remorse for her racial statements against black people".

"The ANC calls on people of this country to stand up against all forms of racism that is paddled by the likes of Sparrow in our society. The ANC will not idle while people like Sparrow want to reverse the gains of this hard-earned unity and reconciliation in South Africa."

The party said it would be "demanding that the court affirm the previous judgment ordering the racist Sparrow to pay her fine".
