Durban - The mayor of KwaZulu-Natal's Msunduzi municipality was involved in a car accident on Monday morning, the municipality said.

“The mayor was on his way to a meeting when his vehicle collided with a truck on the N3 near Mariannhill toll gate,” municipality spokesman Brian Zuma said.

The mayor, the driver, and his bodyguard were taken to Hillcrest hospital for a check-up, but they sustained no injuries.

Paramedics ER24 however said in a statement a high profile government official sustained serious injuries in the crash on the N3 outside Shongweni.

“Just after 10am a municipality maintenance truck crashed into the blue-light vehicle which was headed towards Durban,” spokeswoman Luyanda Majija said.

“The official sustained serious injuries and was stabilised on scene before transportation to Hillcrest hospital for further treatment. He was transported along with his driver and bodyguard who both sustained minor injuries.”

Majija said an eyewitness who saw the collision take place in his rear view mirror saw a medium-sized truck drive across the highway and hit the car. Majija said two occupants of the truck, both men in their forties, sustained minor injuries. - Sapa
