Johannesburg -

The Portfolio Committee on Police on Sunday condemned the killing of four people at KwaMashu Hostel, north of Durban.

“People who go around shooting others must be arrested immediately so that everyone out there who might have had the same intentions can see that the tide against crime has turned,” committee chairman Francois Beukman said in a statement.

The four people were shot dead in a house on Friday evening.

Beukman called on police to deploy adequate resources and manpower to crime-prone areas such as the KwaMashu Hostel, and urged people to assist the police in the fight against crime.

“The more our people volunteer information to SAPS (SA Police Service) about these criminal elements, the safer our communities will be.”

Beukman said he was hopeful that the gun control summit the committee would be hosting in February would come up with interventions that would lead to a reduction in gun-related incidents.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said a task team, consisting of members of the Hawks, crime intelligence and detectives, was established to investigate the murders.

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said:

“Additional manpower, including public order police, has been deployed... to monitor and patrol the area”. - Sapa
