Mandla Kunene in an ICU at the Medi Clinic Newcastle hospital.
Durban - The Post Office has agreed to pay the R40 000 hospital bill of the Newcastle postman who was mauled by three boerboel dogs.
Mandla Kunene, 42, a contracted postal worker for 10 years, was mauled by the dogs in the Signal Hill suburb two weeks ago. He sustained injuries to his arms, head and legs.
Kunene was in a critical condition at a Newcastle hospital and was discharged last week.
A spokesman for the Post Office, Johan Kruger, said yesterday that management had decided to settle Kunene’s hospital bill. He said trauma counsellors had been sent to visit the injured man and his family to help them deal with the situation.
But the Post Office would not be paying Kunene while he is away from work, nor would it be compensating him for the injuries sustained.
“Remember, he is a contracted worker and not a full-time employee,” said Kruger.
On whether Kunene would be compensated, Kruger said: “At the moment compensating him is not on the cards and that matter has not been discussed.”
His future with the company is also in limbo as a decision has not been taken on whether he will return to work. “I do not know what will happen; we shall have to see,” said Kruger.
Kunene’s brother, Zweli, could not be reached for comment.
