Durban -

The body of a 12-year-old schoolboy was found trapped in a container at a school in Ladysmith on Thursday.

It was believed that the pupil was playing with his friends at Inkanyezi Special School when he got locked in a container storing material for construction work at the school.

The boy’s friends apparently reported the incident the next day (on Thursday), after which the container was broken open.

The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Nelisiwa Peggy Nkonyeni, extended her condolences to the family, friends and school.

“Our prayers are with the family and all those close to the deceased during this very difficult time,” she said.

Education department spokesman, Muzi Mahlambi, said: “We are saddened at the death of the learner on the school’s premises.

“What we need to do now is respect the family and avoid making damaging speculations.”

The school principal declined to comment and the cause of the pupil’s death is being investigated by the police.
