Durban - A Chesterville family’s home partially collapsed in the rains and they have been left with only the clothes on their backs.

Jabulani and Dudu Shozi, and their two adult children Thulani, and Xolile, slept out in the rain on Monday night and have yet to find somewhere else to stay.

“It was about 2.30pm, on my way back from work when I received a call from my neighbour telling me there was something happening at my house. When I reached home, the house was full of water, I just stood there powerless.

“Everything has been damaged, we are only left with the clothes we are wearing,”said Shozi.

When the Daily News visited on Tuesday afternoon, the family were gathered outside their home.

Dudu said she had not slept since Monday.

“I have been sitting outside the whole night. I do not know what to do. It seems like my mind is not working, because we do not know where to start. We have been living in this house since 2010.

“It would be better if we can just get another house,” she said.

“We are just waiting for the municipality to do something. They should meet us halfway as this is beyond our control,” said resident, Winnie Mbotho.

Ward 24 councillor, Jabulisile Mbongwa, with officials from the municipality’s disaster management unit, visited on Tuesday.

“There is nothing we can do at the moment. We will see as the process unfolds from the disaster management team as to how we can help the families,” said Mbongwa.
