Durban - Rescue and emergency workers freed a child trapped in a drain pipe by pouring oil on her to ease her out.

The 11-year-old-girl got trapped in the drain pipe while playing with her friends in the Izingolweni area, on the South Coast on Thursday.

It took rescuers 45 minutes to free her.

Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha, said the children were playing around the pipe when the girl slipped down the pipe, bottom first.

She was wedged in the narrow opening.

“When paramedics arrived they found a severely distressed girl trapped in the pipe,” said Botha.

“She was in an awkward position. Unable to cut through the pipe, we decided to put oil around her body and then gently pulled her out,” he said.

Paramedics examined the child and found she had suffered no injuries.

The family could not be reached for comment last night.

Botha said she was left with her parents.

Port Shepstone police search and rescue, Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire services assisted in the rescue.
