A runaway truck crashed into four cars and two taxis on the Musgrave side of King Dinizulu (Berea) Road on Wednesday night, killing a 21-year-old man and injuring several other people.
When The Mercury visited the scene it appeared that the truck had careered at least 400m from the initial crash site on the Tollgate Bridge before coming to a standstill, on top of an SUV, on the grass embankment alongside the N3 near Botanic Gardens Road.
Rescuers used the Jaws of Life to cut the truck driver and those trapped in the SUV from the wreckage.
Witness Andre Panday, a tow truck driver, said the truck came speeding down from Tollgate Bridge and ploughed into a Toyota Etios, carried on to Currie Road and then another block to Botanic Gardens Road.
“I was at the Essenwood Road (Stephen Dlamini Road) robots… it missed me by a whisker. I had to drive on to the pavement. It was really bad,” he said.
Another witness said he thought the truck hit two beggars, killing one “almost instantly”.
“The truck went flying into a tree, then continued speeding down the hill,” the witness said.
Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said: “All the injured people were treated on scene before they were transported to various hospitals.
“Upon our arrival we found that a heavy goods vehicle had collided with multiple vehicles, including two minibus vehicles.”
The cause of the accident would be investigated by police, she said
When asked for his reaction the owner of the truck – who identified himself only as Orlando – said: “What else do you do in such an instance? What would you do? The first I did was check on my guy (the driver).”
