Search for child after deadly bakkie crashComment on this story
Durban - KwaZulu-Natal emergency services were still searching for a fifth child on Monday morning after a bakkie carrying schoolchildren crashed into a dam in the Midlands.
“The search for a fifth child is continuing at the farm dam, where a bakkie crashed earlier this [Monday] morning,” provincial spokesman Robert McKenzie said in a statement.
Police divers had already retrieved four bodies after the bakkie crashed into the dam in the Mooi River area. Another 25 children survived but were suffering from hypothermia, he said.
McKenzie said the children were in Grade 3 in primary school.
Although emergency workers were not certain exactly how many children were on the bakkie, McKenzie said it was believed that one was still missing.
“Farm machinery has been used to breach the dam wall and drain the water out of the dam, and a police sniffer dog has now also been brought in to help search the water.
“The canopy which was separated from the bakkie has been located and rescue efforts currently are being focused in this area,” said McKenzie.
