Durban – Two people were killed and a tanker caught alight in collision between three vehicles on Monday.

Robert McKenzie, spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal provincial Emergency Medical Service, said that the collision occurred near the Peter Brown Drive off-ramp from the N3 on Town Hill.

McKenzie said that two people had died and eight had been injured in the collision. The tanker caught alight and motorists heading in towards Pietermaritzburg were being urged to use alternative routes.

ER24 spokesman Pieter Rossouw said: “The truck allegedly lost control and collided with at least three construction vehicles on the road as that part of the N3 is undergoing road maintenance.”

He said that one of the deceased had sustained severe burn wounds, as had two of the injured, who were described as being in a critical condition.

Rossouw said their bodies were covered in second degree burn wounds.

Police and fire crews were also at the accident scene. The injured were taken to various hospitals in Pietermaritzburg.
