Durban - Shack dwellers of Emmause informal settlement near Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, will spend the night in the cold after their shacks were demolished on Tuesday.

Residents told Sapa that a private security company demolished scores of shacks in the area.

“They did the same thing last week Monday,” resident Muzi Mkhize said.

“Today again they destroyed our shacks and set the material alight.”

Mkhize said residents were only told that shacks were not wanted in the area. He said most of the dwellings were destroyed while the owners were still at work.

“Now people are seeing their belongings being destroyed by the fire,” he said.

Spokesman for the eThekwini municipality Thabo Mofokeng said the government was not involved in the demolitions. He said the land in question was privately owned and the municipality had no jurisdiction.
