Durban - A seven-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a quarry in the Waterloo area near Verulam in Durban at about 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the boy was swimming with his friend in the quarry when he experienced difficulty and drowned," netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said.

When Netcare 911 paramedics arrived on the scene they treated the friend for shock. The boy then walked home after being assessed by a paramedic.

The body of the boy who drowned was recovered by a rescue officer from eThekwini fire and rescue and Emergency Control SA officials. The boy was declared dead on the scene by a paramedic, Mathe said.
