Durban - Taxi driver Njabulo Nyawose, whose minibus is alleged to have struck and killed cycling star Burry Stander has instructed his attorney to express his condolences to the Stander family.

Attorney Xolile Ntshulana said he was instructed “to express his heartfelt condolences to the relatives of Burry Stander”.

He added that Nyawose had been painted as a murderer by the cycling community, and was being tried in the court of public opinion.

“My client has been lambasted in the press… This is a very sensitive matter and we appreciate that there is a need for us to be aware of the Stander family’s emotions, and that is why we have chosen not to go to the papers,” he said, adding that the driver had co-operated fully with the police, and would continue doing so.

Family spokesman Zoon Cronje said they would accept Nyawose’s condolences. “The family harbours no ill will towards the taxi driver. They understand it is possible all this man was trying to do was earn a living, the same as Burry was,” he said.

The 24-year-old taxi driver will return to court on March 22.
