Three people were injured and homes destroyed when the storm hit KwaMbonambi and KwaMthethwa near Richards Bay on Monday night, the KwaZulu-Natal government said.

“At least three people, including a disabled child and a pensioner, are being treated in the Ngwelezane hospital,” said cooperative governance MEC, Nomusa Dube said in a statement.

She said they were injured when roofs and walls of houses collapsed during the storm. It was believed more than 20 houses had been damaged by the storm.

The Fuyeni Primary School, the Joko Fuyeni Store and the Umbuso waMathethwa community hall were also damaged. Electricity infrastructure was also affected, she said.

Dube said she had sent a team of provincial disaster management experts to assess the damage and to provide relief. - Sapa
