Protesting students barricaded two of the three entrances to the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Westville on Wednesday, the university said.

“The students intimidated other students and staff and (the police were) present. Access to the various buildings on campus has been limited. Financial aid is at the centre of the students’ protests,” said university spokeswoman Nomonde Mbadi in a statement.

She said that on a yearly basis the university was faced with the challenge of an increase in the number of students requiring financial assistance to study at the University.

“The funding provided by the National Student Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is insufficient to meet the growing demand. Over the years the University has committed itself to supplement the funds received from NSFAS.”

This year the university committed R18.6-million to boost the funds received from financial aid.

“We sincerely regret any inconvenience that parents, students and staff have experienced. The matter is receiving urgent attention,” said Mbadi.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Phindile Radebe could not be immediately reached for comment. -
