Hundreds of minibus taxi drivers protested in Durban on Thursday, complaining that metro police officers were targeting them when issuing traffic fines.
Colonel Jay Naicker said the protest started on Thursday morning at the Botanic Gardens. The drivers marched to the city hall to hand over a memorandum.
“The organiser of the march failed to take control of the crowd and the protesters got violent. We had to deploy additional public order police to monitor the situation,” Naicker said.
He said after the protest people formed groups in different parts of Durban and caused chaos. Police were sent to disperse them.
Officers in about 15 metro police cars monitored the protest on Bram Fischer and KE Masinga roads. A Sapa reporter on the scene saw broken glass and people waving knobkerries.
