Durban -

Two taxis were swept down a river after heavy rain near Umhlanga in KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said on Wednesday.

Spokesman Chris Botha said paramedics and police received a report on Tuesday morning of taxis being washed away, and had searched for the taxis in the Umhlangane River since.

He said there were conflicting reports on the number of taxis missing.

“After flying over the river we spotted two of the missing vehicles. The helicopter landed on an island in the river for the divers to search the wreckages.”

After a thorough investigation they found no sign of any occupants.

“That river flows so wide and so strong and it is not far from the sea,” Botha said. - Sapa
