Durban - Three people were killed and 10 others were injured in an accident on Wednesday afternoon in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said.

A car, bakkie and taxi collided on Asiphephe Road, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

Paramedics had to free two passengers trapped in the vehicles with the Jaws of Life. The patients sustained critical injuries.

All passengers were treated on the scene and transported to a nearby hospital.

The cause of the accident was not known.
