Durban - An outing with four friends on Saturday night ended tragically, after three of them were killed in an accident in Chatsworth.

Patson Osman said four of his friends were on their way to drop off one of the men, Malawian Harris Phiri, at his wife’s Welbedacht home at about 11pm when the accident happened in Welbedacht Road.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident and said that a case of culpable homicide was being investigated by Chatsworth police.

“It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. Three died at the scene and one sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital. The deceased’s identities have not all been identified as yet. The case is still under investigation.”

According to ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson, the vehicle crashed through a barrier and into a brick wall, rolled and landed on its roof.

One man, believed to be the driver, was taken to RK Khan Hospital where he remained in a critical condition on Sunday night.

The four men were in a Fiat Palio that had been left with one of them by a client for repairs.

Jackson said the three men died at the scene, and the Jaws of Life were required to free them before paramedics could attend to the sole survivor.

Imtiaz Jasaf, the owner of the Mobeni Heights house where Phiri rented a room, said he was shocked that his tenant was dead.

“I could trust that man with my house and my car. I would go on holiday and leave my home in his care,” he said. “I can’t believe this has happened

.”

Jasaf said he last saw Phiri on Saturday afternoon when he was fixing a client’s car in the yard. A distraught Mousa Akaman, Phiri’s friend, said that Phiri was like a brother to him and he would miss his humble and honest demeanour. - Daily News
