Almost two months after an underground leak was detected at a petrol station in KwaMashu, the site remains closed.
A spokeswoman for Total South Africa, Lerato Matsaneng, said the site remained closed because the company was still implementing interim remedial measures to fix the leak.
“We will initiate long-term measures, once the necessary licensing is in place,” Matsaneng said.
The leak was made public by Telkom almost a month ago after its underground infrastructure was damaged, disrupting the telecommunication service of more than 1 450 customers in the Emlanjeni, Emthini, Esibululungu and KwaMashu H and K sections.
Last month, the eThekwini water department called on the company to clean out the contaminated soil in the vicinity and replace the plastic water pipes.
The head of water services in the city, Neil Macleod, said that in the past few weeks, Total South Africa had fixed its tanks and the leaks had been contained. - Daily News
