Durban - Traffic volumes are increasing on KwaZulu-Natal roads as people make their way to the coast for their holidays, the provincial transport department said on Thursday.

“Busy tollgates are recording an average 2100 vehicles per hour as holidaymakers travel to mainly the province's coastal tourist destinations,” spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said.

Traffic and police officers, emergency services staff and customs officials would be monitoring roads during this busy period.

Since the start of the month, over 71 000 vehicles had been checked and almost 12 500 fines issued.

The most common offence was speeding, followed by driving without a licence and driving an unlicensed vehicle.

Provincial transport MEC Willies Mchunu warned road users to remain vigilant and follow traffic rules.

“Let's all play our part and respect speed limits, drive roadworthy vehicles, be patient towards other road users, and rest every two hours or 200 kilometres,” he said.
