Durban - Two people died when the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the R34 between Utrecht and the N11 near Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said on Monday.

A man in his thirties suffered severe head injuries and died on the scene on Sunday night, ER24 spokesman Luyanda Majija said.

A woman in her 40s suffered severe spinal injuries and was paralysed. She died upon arrival at the hospital, Majija said.

The left side of the taxi was ripped open and all the passengers, nine of them children, were thrown out.
