Durban - Two pupils are feared drowned after they went missing while crossing the flooded Phongolo River after school.
The two were with a group of four others trying to cross the raging river in the Hlazane area in northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday.
Spokesman for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Vernon Mchunu, said the four were treated for near drowning. Heavy rains in the province in the past week have claimed the lives of, at least, 10 people with the KZN South Coast being the hardest hit.
Mchunu said eight people were killed on the South Coast as a result of collapsed houses and lightning.
Several others in the Midlands had also been treated after being hit by lightning, he said.
MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube has issued a red alert, warning of further rain from tomorrow.
