Durban – The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) says anyone found to have participated in or benefited from the alleged selling of admission spaces at the institution will face prosecution.

In a statement on Sunday, vice-chancellor Dr Albert van Jaarsveld said the university’s forensic services department and the Hawks had been working to identify accomplices and beneficiaries of the “racket”.

“It is anticipated that further arrests will be made soon,” he said.

The Mercury’s sister paper, the Sunday Tribune, has reported that spaces at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine and other health science places at UKZN were allegedly being sold for between R250 000 and R500 000.

Earlier this month, the Hawks swooped on three suspects.

Varsha and Hitesh Bhatt, and their now co-accused, Preshni Hiraman, were arrested and charged with corruption for their alleged involvement. They are out on bail of R40 000 each.
