Students gather in long queues at the Durban campus of Unisa to register for the year. Picture: Nqobile Mbonambi
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande is unhappy with registration processes at Unisa in Durban which has students sleeping outside the campus to be first in queues.
He made an unannounced visit to the institution on Tuesday to assess its “preparedness” to receive students this year.
“The long queues need to be sorted out,” he said.
“The students are not separated in terms of the year they are applying for and subjects they will be doing.”
He noted that “everyone is squashed into one line”.
Nzimande said he was not pleased after students told him they had slept outside the campus and queued from 3am to register, although he acknowledged that the problem was not unique to Unisa.
Although Unisa management had told him students could register online, it was evident that not all students had computers or access to computers.
The minister said that plans were in place to build two new universities – in Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape – to reduce overcrowding, but urged students to also apply to study at Further Education and Training (FET) colleges.
“FET colleges are just as good as universities. Students need to understand our country’s universities cannot take in all students that applied.”
Nzimande said plans were in place to deal with striking students this year. Those would be announced by President Jacob Zuma later this month.
He added that his department planned to allocate more money for underprivileged students to be able to further their studies. - The Mercury

It is so frustrating registering for a postgraduate qualification through UNISA. I went there today and waited for 4 hours the lady at Postgrad advice and registrations said that she has to submit my application to Pretoria as the BTech does not give entrance to Honours yet I was told by the lecturers that it does give access. Furthermore the entrant level is NQF6. They should hire more student advisors to walk the passage ways and help people!

I've tried all the new contact information of UNISA but it left me more frustrated than ever. I will have to maar get into my car and go and stand in these long queus to get my registration status from "IN PROGRESS" to something at least that works. Who was the bright spark who decided to close down their callcentres??

i think unisa need to hire more proffesional staff to deal with the student, as a unisa student the service is not that is poor based on the long queues but also peaple that deals with this queues have no proper training as they, unisa just hired 2nd and 3rd year that don't have the knowlegde of how to deal with the public.

This has been the case since last year. I am a returning student and went to Unisa for 3 days at midnight just to get a place in line all to no avail as people just push and shove their way forward. I tried online registration since also to no avail as the site seems to be down as well. It is highly frustrating and im afraid i might not be able to register.

It is really frustrating, my son has gone to UNISA for the third time this week,on 2 occassions he was turned away,he left home this morning at 5am and his number is in the 700`s. Are there no systems in place? someone from the department should step in and do something, talk is cheap. dont they know that this happens every year in January? Why can`t the system be streamlined?

UNISA is run by uncivilised , uneducated ANC riff raff , and anyone who goes there in an attempt to get a fake degree , deserves what they get ...... A FAKE DEGREE . We as the HR department in my company do not hire Affirmative action staff that were educated under the farcical 11% pass rate of the 1990's , nor any of the Tenderpreneur uni's like Unisa . And these creatures wonder why they can't get jobs !!! sad really !

UNISA IS GONE FROM BAD TO WORSE WITH A LOT OF RULES NOT FOLLOWED BY THE STAFF THERE ,YET ITS FORCED ONTO STUDENTS, LIKE FOLLOWING THE QUEUE FROM THE GATE WHILE THEY SNEAK PEOPLE IN THROUGH THE PARKING AREA. THEN THEY ASK US TO RESPECT THEM YET THEY SCREAM LIKE UNEDUCATED GRADE ONES ESPECIALY THOSE IN THE STUDENT ADVISORY DEPARTMENT. I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED AND DISAPPOINTED WITH THE TREATMENT WE RECEIVED,MAYBE IF NOTICES WERE PUT UP INFORMING US ABOUT THE SUDDEN CHANGE OF RULES WE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FOLLOW IT BUT THERE WAS NOTHING BESIDES THE STAFF SCREAMING.SOME OF THE RIDICULOUS RULES WERE 1) U HAVE TO HAVE A NUMBER TO ENTER ORELSE U HAVE TO WAIT AT THE GATE OR YOU ARE CHASED OUT.2)THEY ONLY TAKE SIX HUNDRED STUDENTS A DAY FOR REGISTRATIONS.3)IF WE WANT A TICKET WE HAVE TO BE WAITING FROM 4 O CLOCK IN THE MORNING.- WERE DID ALL THESE RULES COME FROM WITHOUT ANY NOTICE. IF THEY REALLY WANT ORDER THEY SHOULD DIVIDE THE POPULATION OF UNISA STUDENTS EQUALLY AND THEN GIVE EVERY ONE APPOINTMENTS AS TO WHICH DAY TO COME IN AND FOR FIRST TIME REGISTRATIONS , IT SHOULD BE ON CERTAIN DATES.IN THAT WAY NOBODY GETS LEFT AND NOBODY WASTES TIME ON GOING THERE FOR NOTHING BECAUSE WHEN I WENT THERE THE RUDE STAFF SENT ME BACK FOR NOT HAVING A TICKET.ONE WHOLE DAY WENT FOR WASTE BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE STAFF OF UNISA.WE DO KNOW THAT ONLINE REGISTRATION IS EASIER BUT SOME OF US GO FOR STUDENT HELP WHICH WE NEVER RECEIVE ASWELL, BUT INSTEAD WE WERE TREATED LIKE ANIMALS AND LEFT OUTSIDE IN THE BLAZING SUN.MAYBE NEXT YEAR NOTICES SHOULD BE PUT UP OR SENT TO STUDENTS ABOUT CHANGE OF RULES.MAYBE SIMILAR TO AN EXAMINATION TIMTABLE , A TIME TABLE FOR REGISTRATIONS SHOULD BE MADE FOR A GROUP OF STUDENTS SO THAT NOBODY IS LEFT OUT OR LEFT HURT OR DISAPPOINTED.

UNISA just goes from bad to worse. There is no accountability there, and I have had years worth of trouble with just trying to finish my degree as they keep changing the requirements or they just cancel a degree altogether. So glad I completed my degree last year!!!

As a UNISA student for 10yrs it still amazes me that students do not register online but rather insist on going to the campus and standing in long queues. Took me 10 minutes to complete my 2012 registration last week.
