While members of the former Cato Manor organised crime unit were being arrested, relatives of their alleged victims felt relief and were overcome with emotion.
News of the arrests came as a shock to Sbu Ndlovu whose son, Kwazi, was shot dead by members of the unit in 2010.
The 16-year-old was apparently sleeping in the living room of his home when they stormed in looking for an escaped prisoner. Shots were fired and Kwazi was killed.
The police unit had gone to his home because they were apparently told that Sibusiso Thili Mzimela, one of six prisoners who had escaped from Westville prison, lived there.
Yesterday an emotional Ndlovu became silent when he heard about the arrests. After several minutes he said he had no idea what to think and then asked for time and would speak to The Mercury on another day.
In August the National Prosecuting Authority said it had decided not to prosecute the police officers responsible for Kwazi’s death.
But Ndlovu had vowed to continue fighting for justice because, he said, his son had not possessed a gun and was a normal teenager who liked rap music and art. - The Mercury
