Woman dies in 100m plunge off cliff

Durban - A 49-year-old woman died on Wednesday when her car plunged over the edge of a cliff in Monteseel, near Hammarsdale.

The accident happened on Wednesday morning.

The woman is believed to have been alone when her vehicle went off the cliff face, the wreckage coming to rest about 100m-150m below in the bush.

Netcare 911 rescue unit, KwaZulu-Natal EMS, SAPS air wing and rescue, the fire department and volunteer rescue organisations were all involved at the scene.

They found the woman, who had died on impact, lying outside the wreckage.

KZN EMS spokesman Robert McKenzie said rescuers used search and rescue dogs to search the area, but could not find any other victims.

A police helicopter helped with the search.

The police placed the body on a stretcher which was flown to the top of the cliff and taken to a local mortuary for further investigation.

The commander of the Durban police search and rescue unit, Dave Steyn, said it was believed the woman was from the area, but he could not say exactly where.

The cause of the accident was still being investigated.

On Wednesday, police spokesman Thulani Zwane, said: “We can confirm that Inchanga Police Station are investigating an inquest docket.
