Durban - With the Sun City spotlights having just gone out on this year’s Miss South Africa pageant, the slender beauties will now have to step aside… for beauties of other sizes.

The Miss Flamboyant pageant, which will be held in Durban next year, will open the publics eyes to power of the “plus-size” woman.

With single and married women welcome to enter, the only requirements to be a part of the pageant are to be between the ages of 18 and 35, and have a waist measurement ranging from at least 92cm, to a maximum of 112cm.

Pageant chief executive, Themba Mthembu, said the purpose of the pageant was to advocate a healthy lifestyle and confidence among bigger women, while maintaining the traditional elements of beauty and glamour.

“There is not going to be any swimwear, it will be more like a fashion show. There will be formal, casual, traditional and evening wear, as well as questions asked by judges,” Mthembu said.

He said he was passionate about restoring the self-esteem of women who had a negative perception of themselves because of their body shape and weight.

Registration for the pageant opened last week.

Three finalists will be selected from each province – with the first regional selection on May 4 in Durban. They will then progress to the grand finale, which will take place on October 26, also in Durban.

Prizes for the winner will include R50 000 and a new car.

“We are in discussions with (a manufacturer) to get sponsorship for a... car to suit the pageant winner,” Mthembu said.
