Johannesburg - Four soccer players were killed on Sunday night when the minibus they were travelling in collided with a bakkie along the R71 road near Polokwane, the Limpopo traffic department said.

Spokesperson Kagiso Motone said the four were among 25 people who were travelling in the minibus when the vehicles collided head-on.

“It is unclear how the accident happened, but the impact forced the minibus off the road, where it fell on its side in the opposite lane in the path of oncoming traffic,” she said.

The players, who were members of the Polokwane City football club, were returning from a soccer match at the University of Limpopo’s Turfloop campus.

Motone was unable to confirm the number of the people who were injured.

The injured - include the driver of the bakkie, who was travelling alone - were rushed to the Mankweng Hospital for medical treatment. - Sapa
