Johannesburg - Police on Saturday recovered the body of one of the two 14-year-old schoolgirls who drowned after attempting to cross the Tubatse River in Burgersfort, Limpopo.

“The two girls tried to cross the river on their way from school on Friday when they were swept away by a current. Divers are still at the scene where the body of the girl was recovered. The search for the other girl is still continuing,” said spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto.

The heavy rain that has continued to fall in provinces such as Limpopo, Gauteng, North West, and Mpumalanga brought with it flash floods and overflowing rivers and dams over the past few days.

On Friday, the South African Weather Service warned of more rainfall in Limpopo.

The province is one of the severely drought-stricken areas in the country.
