Modimolle, Limpopo -

A game capture team was extracting a young hippopotamus from a swimming pool in Modimolle, Limpopo, on Thursday, said the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The team would sedate the hippo and lift it out of the pool with a crane, spokeswoman Isabel Wentzel said.

She said the five-year-old animal, which had been chased from a game reserve by its herd, would be taken to another location.

“He was pushed out of the family because another baby was born. The older ones do not tolerate him anymore.”

He got into the pool at the Monate Conservation Lodge on Tuesday and became stuck. Much of the water had since been drained to make getting him out easier, Wentzel said. - Sapa
