Cape Town - The Basic Education Department has welcomed the National Assembly's Basic Education Committee's decision to fully accept its catch-up plan for the Limpopo Education Department.
“The acceptance of the plan vindicates the department that there are some people who want to deny the department the space to implement the catch-up plan,” department director general Bobby Soobrayan said on Tuesday.
The department also briefed the committee on progress made in the delivery of textbooks, he said in a statement.
The report indicated that of the 1 265 677 textbooks ordered, 1 236 554 were delivered to all schools.
“The variance is meant to cover for those schools that either under-ordered or were not in the names of schools used to order books.”
The committee was told that the only outstanding deliveries were on back orders in the languages of Tshivenda, Xitsonga, and Sepedi in lower grades.
The Tshivenda and Xitsonga books had since been delivered.
