Bela-Bela - A 69-year-old woman was missing after she was washed away with her husband while swimming in an undercover swimming pool in Bela-Bela, Limpopo police said on Sunday.

They were washed away on Friday in Kariba Lodge when the Bela-Bela dam overflowed, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

“The top part of the dam burst and the water flowed into Kariba Lodge.”

He said a search team was activated when they realised the two were missing.

A body of a 74-year-old man was found on Saturday but his wife was still missing.

“We were anticipating to continue the search today (Sunday) but it cannot happen because of the continuing rain and the river is very full.”

He said the search team was on standby to continue the search should the water decrease.

Sunday newspaper Rapport said ATKV Klein Kariba resort owner Dr Wim de Wet said he heard a dam burst at a neighbouring resort which is situated higher than theirs just after 1pm on Friday.

He said that within seconds a mass of water hit the resort and eyewitnesses saw the couple swept away.

About 50 other holidaymakers were moved to safety, Rapport said.

Mulaudzi appealed to communities to be vigilant at all times and avoid crossing full rivers.

“Motorists should not cross full bridges. We are working very closely with the transport department to make sure the areas are attended to.” - Sapa
