Johannesburg - Limpopo’s Safety and Security MEC George Phadagi died on Sunday, police said.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Phadagi died in a private hospital in Pretoria on Sunday morning. The cause of his death was not known at this stage.

“The entire (South African) Police Service Limpopo management wish to express a word of deep condolence to his family, friends and colleagues in government,” said provincial police Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe.

Phadagi was a patriot who loved his country, his province and its people, Mpembe said in a statement.

“He will be remembered as a true crime-buster who served with dignity, distinction and loyalty.”

The Congress of the People's Limpopo provincial legislature caucus on Sunday evening extended its condolences to Phadagi's family and friends.

Cope provincial whip Tshilidzi Ravhuanzwo in a statement said Phadagi worked tirelessly to serve the people of the Limpopo province and the country.

“His struggle credentials cannot be questioned and we believe that he laid a good foundation for those who are still to come after him.” - Sapa
