Polokwane - A cash-in-transit vehicle overturned in Polokwane on Tuesday, killing the driver, authorities said.

“The SBV truck overturned at Lehae-Labatho, Polokwane and killed the driver instantly,” provincial transport spokeswoman Kagiso Mootane said.

Mootane said the accident added to the province's mounting road death toll of about 120 people since the start of the festive season.

In the meanwhile, police have identified the victims who were killed in Monday's fatal accident on the N1 freeway between Polokwane and Botlokwa.

The husband and wife were driving from Boksburg to Vhembe district when their sedan collided with a bakkie and caught fire. They were trapped in their car and burnt to death.

Polokwane police spokesman Captain Ntobeng Phala said the victims were identified as Vuyo Swaedi, 28, and his wife Pretty Hlatswayo, 28, based on the registration of their car but added that DNA testing might be conducted to verify their identities. The occupants of the other car were critically injured and rushed to hospital.

“We are investigating a case of capable homicide, we are still not sure as to what happened,” he said. The road was closed for nearly four hours as authorities cleared the accident scene. Motorists had to take a detour of 45 kilometres to get back on the N1.

Mootane said the statistics would be released later, “however unofficial records indicated that at least 120 people lost their lives in Limpopo” since the start of the festive season.
