Bela-Bela - An elderly women bled to death when a nyala bull pierced her leg with its horn just outside Bela-Bela, Limpopo, according to a report on Saturday.

Hettie Gerber, 79, died minutes after the nyala pierced an artery in her right upper leg on Friday, Beeld reported.

She was busy feeding the nyala at the time.

Gerber had lived on a small holding in Buyskop, about 10km outside Bela-Bela for the past five years.

Every morning she would walk from her house to an enclosed camp where she fed rabbits, chickens and birds.

Gerber's daughter-in-law Christa Graham told the newspaper that the nyala bull was not tame and lived in the hill near the house. It would sometimes come down to the enclosed camp and Gerber would feed it.

Workers found Gerber at about 7.30am.

Paramedics were called but Gerber died before they arrived. - Sapa
