Five youths were killed when a bakkie they were travelling in overturned in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga community safety department said on Tuesday.

Spokesman Joseph Mabuza said a Nissan Navara was transporting approximately 13 young people and driven by a teenager estimated to be 14-years-old.

“The vehicle was travelling from Thulamahhashe towards Dwarsloop when it overturned... at the New Forest at 11.40pm on Monday,” he said.

Five of the young people were killed during the accident while six others were seriously injured, including the driver.

MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Vusi Shongwe called for the arrest of the owner of the vehicle “as accidents such as these could be avoided by not allowing youngsters to access vehicles”.

Mabuza said police were still conducting the identification process and further details on the incident would be made available later. - Sapa
