Textbook delivery 'satisfactory'Comment on this story
The civil rights group Section 27 was satisfied on Wednesday with the delivery of textbooks and workbooks to Limpopo schools.
“We are encouraged that most schools in Limpopo, who had received no textbooks before the commencement of the 2012 academic year, have received their textbooks and workbooks for 2013,” the group said in a statement.
Even though the delivery was not yet complete, Section27 commended the basic education department for the distribution of books.
It said it had received reports from some schools that they were still waiting for their full complement of textbooks and workbooks.
“These schools have followed up directly with the (department) and have been assured that the outstanding textbooks and workbooks will be delivered by the end of this week.”
On Tuesday, the department said at least 98 percent of textbooks had been delivered to inland schools before the first day of the 2013 academic year on Wednesday.
Inland schools are in the provinces of Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumulanga, and North West.
Last year Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga was criticised as many Limpopo schools did not receive textbooks on time. Some schools were reportedly still without textbooks in August. - Sapa
