Man held for throwing son into road

A man has been arrested for attempted murder after he threw his four-year-old son into a road in front of an oncoming car in Tshifulani, Thohoyandou, Limpopo police said on Monday.

Spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo said the man and his wife had been arguing about a protection order she sought to obtain from the Vuwani magistrate's court against him.

The woman had claimed he beat her, and the hearing was set for June 5.

During the argument at about 6pm on Sunday, the man apparently took a stick, intending to beat her.

Malelo said the woman ducked and he missed her. She ran away and he followed her, threatening to kill their four-year-old son.

The woman managed to grab her son, and ran with him alongside a road until her husband caught up with her, pinned her to the ground, and grabbed the boy.

Malelo said the man then threw the boy into the road. The oncoming driver was travelling slowly enough to stop before hitting the child.

When the woman stood up she began screaming for help, and a member of the public who heard her screams produced his licenced pistol and fired two shots into the air to stop the husband who had grabbed the boy once again and run off into nearby bushes.

The man stopped and a fight ensued between the two men.

The community member pistol-whipped the man and took him to a nearby satellite police station. He was arrested for attempted murder.

He would appear in court soon. - Sapa
