Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela can rest in peace because he has done great things for the world, particularly South Africa, the ANC Veterans' League (ANCVL) said on Friday.

“Madiba is the embodiment of peace, love and democracy, whose life had inspire generations throughout the world..,” ANCVL general secretary Natso Khumalo said in a statement.

Just before midnight on Thursday, President Jacob Zuma announced that South Africa's first democratically elected president had died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Khumalo quoted Mandela as saying: “Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty for his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore why I will sleep for the eternity.”

He described Mandela as the embodiment of peace, love and democracy and said his life's legacy would live on for generations to come.

Khumalo extended the ANCVL's condolences to Mandela's family, friends, comrades, and those who mourned him all over the world. - Sapa
