Johannesburg - Nelson Mandela has bequeathed R50 000 each to a number of personal staff, including Zelda la Grange, in his will that was read out in Johannesburg on Monday.

He also left money to a number of schools and organisations.

Other beneficiaries listed in the will that was read by Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke included his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Executors say Mandela's estate worth estimated R46 million.

Mandela bequeathed R1.5 million to the NRM Family Trust.

He also left royalties to the trust of which a percentage would be given to the ANC.

Wits University, Qunu Secondary School and Orlando West High School in Soweto bequeathed R100 000 from the former president.

Mandela has left behind an estate that includes an upscale house in Houghton, a modest dwelling in Qunu and royalties from book sales, including his autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom”.

More visibly, his legacy also includes a potent political and moral brand that some of his more than 30 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have already used to market everything from clothing to reality TV.

Some of his grandchildren have started a line of caps and sweatshirts that feature his image under the brand “Long Walk to Freedom”. Two of his US-based granddaughters starred in a reality television show called “Being Mandela”.

Such aggressive marketing - as well as reports of fighting among family members over Mandela's money - have fuelled the impression in SA that some of the family members have exploited their famous relative. - Reuters, Sapa and AFP
