The award, which has been running for several years, is an initiative started by The Media magazine. It aims to recognise women who have made outstanding contributions to the fourth estate.

There were four finalists in total: Professor Jane Duncan, chairperson of the Media and Information Society at Rhodes University; Esmare Weideman, editor of You, Huisgenoot, and Drum; Terry Volkwyn, CEO of Primedia Broadcasting; and Patta herself.

In a press release sent out shortly after the announcement, Bronwyn Keene-Young, e.tv's Chief Operating Officer, said: "We are proud of Debora's achievements and we congratulate her on her well-deserved win. Debora has been with e.tv since its inception in 1998, and she has trained and developed many journalists. She has also played an integral role in the launch of our 24-hour eNews Channel last year."

Of the win, Patta said: "This is a great honour, especially as I was up against such formidable talent. This is a prestigious award and it sends a strong message to young women - don't just knock on the door, bash it down."
