Independent Media scooped awards in journalism and multimedia projects at the prestigious International News Media Association (INMA) Global Media Awards in New York on Tuesday. A number of young people, some of whom were interns at the time, were invaluable in putting together the award-winning projects.

This is their story.

Cape Town – The multimedia unit for Independent Media – Mojo (Mobile Journalism) – won second place for best use of video for their work titled,

.

The story focused on a young girl who was a victim of sexual abuse, and how the exploitation of her body impacted on her childhood.

The production involved stop motion footage that was edited to create a narrative of hand-drawn pictures accompanied by a heart-aching voiceover and sound effects.

The concept for the video was created and produced by Laura Skippers, Devon Daniels, Azande Sidyiyo, Nidha Narrandes, Terry van der Walt and Zahra Kharsany, who delved into the emotional and highly sensitive nature of the individual’s experience.

Daniels was responsible for the drawings used in the video.

He was thrilled to be part of a team who remained focused and committed to a powerful subject matter and bringing awareness to this girl’s circumstances.

“For me it was quite enlightening because as a graphic artist you want to be able to tell stories visually”

“To be a part of that process was uplifting because you are telling someone else’s story in a different way, which makes it bit more dynamic and people will latch on to the story more.”

Daniels said that working together with the team allowed everything to “flow”.

“We all had a plan set. Each of us had an objective and task to do. As I said it flowed. All of our visions came together into one.”

This video formed part of the #DontLookAway

campaign that tackled content of the 16 days of Activism in Support of No Violence Against Women and Children.

Independent Media’s

campaign took first place for Best Community Service Campaign.

One of the interns for  RSWM, Tamaryn Africa said: “Being part of the process was amazing.”

“Seeing that we as a country have been experiencing many issues with racism. For me personally, going to the events that we had and doing the stories that we did... It meant a lot to tell those stories.”

She highlighted the importance of producing quality stories and get the stories of the people out there.

Independent Media’s executive producer for Multimedia, Alan Milne said: “We had the opportunity, originally through very careful selection, identify the best of the best as far as our eventual group of interns were concerned”

He said that the interns had the talent and some experience to build on and produce a exceptional standards in their work.

“By banding these creative minds together – on a platform that we could supply – it just gave them the opportunity to spread their wings creatively.”
