Cape Town – A 13-year-old girl who went missing from school on Friday has been found safe and sound.

Leoni Kammies had her family in a panic when she did not make it home after school and disappeared without a trace.

With the recent spate in child disappearances and murders in the Western Cape, the Kleinvlei community reacted immediately, launching searches and broadcasting about the missing girl on Facebook.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut said it was believed the girl did not go to school that day and travelled to Wellington to visit her biological mother.

Traut has now confirmed that Leoni was found in Wellington on Sunday morning.

“The child has been found in Wellington,” he said.

Leoni’s family in Kleinvlei did not want to comment on Sunday.

Chairperson of the Kleinvlei Community Policing Forum (CPF), Julian Unthank, says a “potential crisis” has been averted due to diligence from all role players.

“Leoni was found safe and unharmed. With the quick reaction of the Kleinvlei police, Kleinvlei CPF and neighbourhood watch members from Eesteriver and Delft areas, we successfully prevented what could have been another tragic event."

“I want to thank everyone for all the prayers and support. It again proves a well co-ordinated team can save lives.”
